We are thrilled to share an exciting milestone — Dakota Prairie Commons now has a home. Our community has secured five beautiful acres on the east side of Vermillion, part of a larger 15-acre parcel. This land provides the foundation for our vision: a place where neighbors live intentionally, share resources, and support one another while enjoying private homes within a connected community.
Securing land is one of the biggest challenges cohousing groups face, and overcoming this hurdle brings us one step closer to making Dakota Prairie a reality. We are fortunate to be working closely with a local developer who shares our values and is helping us bring this project to life.
With land in place, we can now begin the exciting process of planning, designing, and preparing for the future. Our goal is to break ground in Spring 2027 and welcome our first neighbors soon after.

This has been a landmark moment for our town — and we couldn’t be more proud. Vermillion has officially been named South Dakota Community of the Year, a recognition that celebrates the energy, collaboration, and forward momentum shaping our future.
It’s a reflection of a town that shows up for one another and continues to grow with purpose. And the celebration doesn’t stop there. For the second year in a row, Vermillion has earned the #1 spot in USA Today’s Best Small Town Arts Scene in America. From colorful murals and public art to vibrant events, performances, and creative gathering spaces, the arts aren’t just something we have here — they’re part of who we are.
This is more than a banner week. It’s proof that Vermillion isn’t just a wonderful place to visit — it’s an extraordinary place to call home.
